We had just gotten back from a day of hiking adventures and the boys were starving (per usual).
Especially in the summer, if my kids are hungry for a snack in the afternoon, I like to take that opportunity to get something nourishing into their bodies rather than just eating packaged food from the pantry.
Green smoothies (or any type of smoothie) are our go-to solution for this. There's no cooking, I can always mix it up and they love helping me make them.
I don't know if it's the bright green color that excites them or that they actually taste really good, but my little dudes get super excited about green smoothies.
For green smoothies, here's how we build ours:
1. Pick one or more greens
Swiss chard, spinach or kale work great!
2. Add 1-2 whole fruits that are naturally sweet!
Pineapple, pears, oranges, mango and banana work really great with the greens. We just throw the fruits in whole instead of using juice so...
I may or may not be obsessed with early mornings and cacao + gut-healthy fats and protein in my coffee.
Mornings feel so fresh and new and full of opportunity.....but the pureness of them can easily get swept away by checking emails, scanning our phones and getting anxious about the to-do list ahead.
The best way to begin your day away from the screen is to create a ritual that starts your day off with intention.
It doesn't have to be an hour long (although it certainly can be)....just 5 or 10 minutes to claim you are committed to self-care and a day ahead that will be lived out from the heart rather than rushed through.
Here's a sample morning routine you may just love:
*make hot drink of choice or a glass of water lemon water (lemon cleanses the live and warm water stimulates healthy digestion)
*grab your yoga mat and find a quiet place in your home with some dim lighting
*sit on mat with your drink and legs crossed, turning your attention to your...
During the warm months, I pretty much make a smoothie once per day.
It's my version of fast food.
(You'd think my kids would start throwing large objects at my head when I begin throwing green stuff in, but they seem totally aloof).
Also, our backyard is my happy place. Which is where smoothies get consumed.
I do yoga, drink smoothies, nap in my hammock, have morning coffee by the fire, eat tacos with neighbors, grow veggies and roll around in the grass with my kiddos back here.
I'm working on making back-yards famous again.
Here's my tip with making smoothies: just throw some stuff in.
To this recipe you can add a protein-powder of choice and different fruits, etc if you choose. The beauty of a smoothie is that they are completely versatile. Just make sure they have lots of protein and fat and low-sugar fruits so you don't overload your system with sugar!

I'm obsessed with this milk.
Think creamy, rich and whole-milk-like.
I put it towards the back of my refrigerator so it's extra cold and then pour a glass, sprinkle a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg on top and drink straight.
This milk also makes my morning Matcha Latte equally as awesome.
The key to making the milk extra creamy is soaking the nuts before blending. I used to skip this step and when I finally started doing it it made a world of difference in the texture.
I make a batch of this every weekend as a part of my food prep and it lasts me through Friday for my smoothies and morning drinks.
If you make a lot of smoothies, I would recommend making a double batch.
Make a batch and tag the picture with #SummitFitEats!
+ 1 cup raw cashews, soaked 4-6 hours (or overnight)
+ 4 cups filtered water
+ 3 dates, pitted
+ 1 tsp vanilla extract (omit if you...
I've been sharing and post pictures on my matcha latte for well over a month now so I'm excited to finally share the official recipe and benefits in a blog post with you.
This crazy green drink has become a favorite part of my routine. The contents of matcha provide me with incredible energy levels without the crash that other forms of caffeine bring (sugary coffee, energy drinks, etc).
And it has has the most wonderful taste I never expected to enjoy as much as I do my morning coffee.....but I do!
I alternative between this and my bulletproof coffee as a part of my morning routine.
If you don't wake up a few minutes early for a morning routine, I highly suggest you do! Getting out of bed on my terms to fuel my mind and body well before the chaos of the day begins is truly what sets the rest of my hours up for success.
